Driving Economic Development in Montgomery County

Montgomery County is home to a thriving and diversified economy. The Council strives to support economic growth in the County that is sustainable and emphasizes racial equity, social justice, innovation and the environment. ​ ​

The Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) is responsible for drafting the County’s Economic Development Strategic Plan with the goal of creating one unified vision for economic development in Montgomery County.

In April 2022, the Council unanimously voted to adopt the County’s four-year Economic Development Strategic Plan. The plan, Moving Forward Together: Strategic Priorities for a Unified Approach to Economic Development, aims to strengthen the County’s economic growth and includes target metrics, strategies and concrete measures for increasing business activity.

Creating New Housing​

With the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, the Council is working toward an ambitious goal—create 41,000 new housing units by the year 2030, with emphasis on affordable housing. ​

The Council’s Economic Development Platform was led by Councilmember Nancy Navarro and approved by the Council in 2019. The platform establishes a long-term vision for economic growth in Montgomery County.
