As of Fiscal Year 2016, Montgomery County government achieved carbon neutrality for County government facilities and fleet vehicle operations.
Our FY2018 carbon footprint, including emissions from all County buildings and fleet operations as well as offsets from the purchase of renewable energy credits, was less than zero metric tons of carbon equivalent. More…
Solar
Goals
Install 6 megawatts of solar on County facilities by the end of 2017.
Progress
Achieved! 7.6 megawatts of solar have been installed on County facilities.

Solar panels installed on County facilities to date have the ability to generate more than 10 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year. That’s enough energy to power more than 800 homes and lowers greenhouse gas emissions as much as taking 1,600 cars off the road or planting 192,000 trees. Future solar projects are being evaluated.

Reduce petroleum fuel consumption by 20% by 2020.

From 2014 to 2018, reduced petroleum consumption by 3.5%.
Montgomery County’s comprehensive Green Fleet Strategy combines sound management, fleet rightsizing, alternative fuels, and innovative technology to achieve a 20% reduction in petroleum consumption by 2020. In FY2018, Green Fleet efforts saved 190,160 gallons of fuel over 2014 levels, representing a 3.5% reduction in petroleum use.

All new County government buildings over 10,000 square feet are designed and constructed to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver.

Montgomery County is improving its ability to anticipate and quickly adapt to extreme weather, economic downturns, and natural and man-made disasters. The County is planning and developing programs to improve availability of critical services and amenities such as public transit, roads, power grid, police, and firefighting operations during these kinds of events.
