Days of Service
There are many days of service throughout the year. Montgomery County Volunteer Center promotes several with our local partners -- MLK Day in January; Earth Month in the Spring; and Community Service Day in October. See them here, and even more days of service below.
Community Service Month
The fourth Saturday of October has been Community Service Day in Montgomery County since 1986. Now our annual celebration of service runs the entire month of October to promote individual group volunteerism across Montgomery County.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service - January 15, 2024
The MLK Day of Service transforms Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions.
Earth Month - All throughout April
Celebrate Earth Day all throughout the month of April and join in projects to improve and beautify our environment! Check the April calendar to find projects when the date gets near.

FEBRUARY
Random Acts of Kindness Week
Celebrate the little things we do for others. This celebration falls in mid February.
MARCH
Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning
This day honors the life, work, and teaching of Cesar Chavez. This day is celebrated on his birthday March 31.
APRIL
Global Youth Services Day
This day celebrates and helps to mobilize the millions of children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through service and service-learning.
JULY
Mandela Day
“Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day.” This day is a time to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good.
SEPTEMBER
9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance - September 11th
A day of charitable service and doing good deeds. Created to provide a positive way to forever remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks, and to remind people of the importance of working more closely together in peace to improve our world.
Just Serve
Maryland Governor partners with Virginia, West Virgina, DC to promote service projects between September and October.
OCTOBER
Be the Change
"Be the Change you wish to see in the world". Each year, South Asian Americans Leading Together coordinates this annual national day of service to inspire and foster civic engagement and community building through volunteerism and community service. Happens in the first week of October.
NOVEMBER
National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week
Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness co-sponsor National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week. During this week, a number of schools, communities and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness.
