Randolph Road Safety Improvement Project
Randolph Road Safety Improvement Project
This project will provide safety improvements to help reduce crash frequency and severity involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and other road users along a 1.3-mile segment of Randolph Road between MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) and MD 97 (Georgia Avenue). This segment of roadway is identified in the Vision Zero High Injury Network, where roadway safety improvement efforts are prioritized. After conducting a Road Safety Audit and study of the corridor in 2023, we are moving forward with project concepts and would like your feedback. The recommended improvements include short term countermeasures to reduce exessive vehicle speeds, pedestrian safety and comfort enhancements, and ADA compliance and access. Longer term countermeasures will also be presented for public feedback and discussion.
July 2025 UpdateOn June 17, 2025, MCDOT hosted a public meeting to present both short and long-term safety recommendations and to solicit feedback from the community. One of the proposals included a road diet along Randolph Road, between Denley Road and Livingston Street. This option aimed to reduce the number of travel lanes to accommodate a wider sidewalk and a buffer between pedestrians and vehicular traffic. However, recognizing the need to further evaluate traffic operations and coordinate with long-range planning efforts—such as the proposed Randolph Road Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor—MCDOT emphasized that the road diet would require additional study.
Following a thorough review of the community feedback received during and after the public meeting, MCDOT will not advance the road diet proposal.
MCDOT will proceed with the implementation of several short-term safety improvements along Randolph Road, which are scheduled for construction within the next two years. These improvements include:
- Installation of a dynamic speed sign to enhance driver awareness;
- Installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon at Bluhill Road to facilitate safer pedestrian crossings;
- Widening of the sidewalk between Dalewood Drive and Denley Road;
- Installation of a curb extension at the western edge of Dalewood Drive to increase pedestrian queuing space; and
- Reduction of the curb radius at Denley Road to improve pedestrian visibility and slow turning vehicles.
These measures are part of MCDOT’s broader commitment to advance multimodal safety and accessibility, particularly along high-risk corridors.
