Pedestrian Collisions in Parking Lots
In 2014, there were 420 reported pedestrian collisions in Montgomery County. Of these, 102, or about one in four, occurred in parking lots and garages. What’s worse, one in ten of these collisions resulted in incapacitating or fatal injuries.
What Are We Doing About It?
Montgomery County is getting the word out to the public about pedestrian collisions in parking lots. Most people are very surprised to learn just how widespread these collisions are and that some of them cause severe injuries. We hope that educating both drivers and pedestrians can help change their attitudes and behaviors in parking lots.
How You Can Help
Practice safe walking and driving in parking lots and garages:
- Look in all directions for cars and people (and look before backing up)
- Listen for cars and people (no texting, no phones)
- Connect through eye contact or waving
