Kensington Parkwood Elementary School Walkshed Safety Evaluations
Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) completed a walkability study for Kensington Parkwood Elementary School in 2019 as part of a countywide effort to identify safe and accessible routes for students walking and bicycling to school. The walkability study reviewed the condition of existing infrastructure and recommended improvements that may be implemented within the school walkshed to provide safe and accessible routes for students walking and biking to the school. Most of the improvements that could be implemented quickly, such as signing and marking, have been completed.
Project Update
Last October, MCDOT met with the community to present the sidewalk and safety recommendations identified in the walkability study. Based on community feedback, MCDOT has updated the proposed improvements to address tree impacts and would now like to share the revised sidewalk proposal and pedestrian safety recommendations with the community.
Pedestrian Safety Recommendations
The updated improvements proposed by MCDOT include:
- Clearbrook Lane: New sidewalk on the northern side of Clearbrook Lane from 4513 Clearbrook Lane to Cedar Lane.
- Dresden Street: New sidewalk on the southern side of Dresden Street (even-numbered addresses) from Cedar Lane to 4408 Dresden Street.
- Wildwood Drive: New sidewalk on the eastern side of Wildwood Drive from Parkwood Drive to 9806 Wildwood Drive, including improved pedestrian crossings at Roxbury Drive and Parkwood Drive.
- Parkwood Drive at Clearbrook Lane: Installation of a pedestrian refuge island at Parkwood Drive and Clearbrook Lane at the Rock Creek Trail crossing.
