The Goal:
The goal of the Vision Zero youth ambassador program is to equip young adults to be the next generation of traffic safety leaders in their community. The program will educate Montgomery County high school students about traffic safety and the importance of roadway design, law enforcement, and education to achieve the goal of Vision Zero.
The Task:
Montgomery County High school students selected to be a youth ambassador are required to commit to the program that teaches them different aspects of Vision Zero and participate in hands-on projects that bring awareness to safety needs in communities around the county. Youth Ambassadors are tasked to complete a group project that encompasses engineering, or education topics. Resources and project guidance are provided from the County to execute projects that will ultimately improve safety in our communities.
The Benefits:
Students will develop leadership skills, learn outreach and engagement techniques, gain social media engagement skills, and other techniques to address traffic safety needs in their community. Ambassadors will also have an opportunity to meet county safety leaders and staff from the Department of Transportation. Ambassadors that complete the program will gain extensive knowledge about Vision Zero and earn up to 35 Student Service-Learning Hours (SSL).

What is Vision Zero?
Vision Zero is an international movement to eliminate all serious and fatal injury crashes from our roadways. At the core of Vision Zero is the belief that people should not have to lose their lives as a price to travel on our roadways. Montgomery County adopted its first Vision Zero Action Plan in 2017 and continues to embark on a mission to make its roads safer through building new sidewalks, bike lanes, traffic signals; performing data-informed enforcement of traffic laws; and curbing dangerous behaviors through community outreach and messaging.
