New Hampshire Avenue High Injury Network Safety Study
Description and Background
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) and Prince George’s County Department of Public Works (PCDPW) performed an evaluation between January 2022 and June 2022 to identify safety needs along MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) between I-495 (Capital Beltway) and MD 320 (Piney Branch Road). This section of MD 650 was designated as a High Injury Network (HIN) corridor in the County Executive’s Vision Zero Plan. This HIN designation means that there are a significant number of serious injuries and fatal crashes along the corridor. The evaluation, which culminated in an HIN Corridor Safety Study, identified corridor safety needs, recommended improvements, and agency responsibility for pursuing those improvements. The safety recommendations that were identified as the MCDOT responsibility by the HIN study are being implemented. Most of the short-term improvements, including pavement marking and sign upgrades, were completed.
Project Update
The project team is working to implement all mid- and long-term safety improvements. Three locations were observed to have a discontinuation of sidewalk along desired pedestrian walking routes. These locations included along the New Hampshire Avenue Service Road between Oakview Drive and Cottrell Terrace, along Mt. Pisgah Road between Oakview Drive and Madre Street, and between the New Hampshire Avenue Service Road and the east side of MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue), approximately 850’ north of the intersection of MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and Dilston Road/Adelphi Road. MCDOT has evaluated the feasibility of installing sidewalks in these three locations and has designed concept plans to provide sidewalk connectivity. Additionally, the existing sidewalks, driveways, and curb/gutter along New Hampshire Ave. Service Road (from property # 9301 to 9615) will be upgraded to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
Public Meeting
On July 27, 2024, the MCDOT Pedestrian Safety team members will visit the neighborhood and inform residents along 9301-9615 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring of upcoming improvements to existing sidewalks, driveways, and curb/gutter from Fox Street to Madre Road on the New Hampshire Avenue Service Road. The project construction is expected to begin by mid- or the last week of August 2024.
